In the Kotsiomiti Natural History Museum, thousands of visitors will honor you for your beneficial activity. The Museum presents a special, magic world that studies the natural history of the region, reveals the creations and the beauty of nature, and refers to the concerns about the natural environment and its protection. It is a world in which, every year, thousands of visitors have the opportunity to gain knowledge of millions of years’ history. Very soon the Museum’s exhibitions will be extended and renovated in order to present the newly added, impressive and unique exhibits and to host educational and inquiring activities. We founded it, we preserve it till today and we keep working hard, remaining vigilant, , consolidating new aims and progressive actions. But this is not enough. We also need your support. For this reason we seek sponsorships from anyone who is able and willing to offer. Sponsoring favors both sides. This sponsoring offers you or your business the opportunity to be publically known as the sponsorship’s data will be properly displayed in prominent places. So the thousands of visitors, will know that they owe to you as well, the provided opportunity to understand, respect and care about our natural wealth and the environment. The Museum invites you to support its effort by promoting its activities. For those who are interested in participating in the work of the Museum, they can ask information for: The ways they can offer their sponsorships. The ways the Museum gives prominence to its sponsors. . The action we take in order to secure in advance the implementation of the legislation tax exemptions on cultural sponsoring. By the Ministry of Culture/GNOS 50532/7-10-1998 Common Ministerial Act, the ministers of finance and culture, provide for cultural sponsorship in the provision: "determination of entities that aim for cultural purposes. The distributed amounts from donations towards national legal entities of beneficiary aims, whether under the legal form of a charity or not, they are drifted from the gross income. (Council of State, decision No 6004/1996)
DONATIONS
The Museum is a permanent and timeless institution. It accepts offers of exhibits and collections relevant to its thematic units that can be exhibited in it, offering the Museum the opportunity to enrich its collections and the visitors the chance to learn about them and get informed about the donor. The donator will be secured and his name will constantly accompany the offer. We invite you to contribute to the work and the development of the Museum. The Museum can undertake action in more sectors with your support and proceed to the enrichment of its collections, evolve its operation and the quality of services that it offers.
The Museum
The "Kotsiomiti Museum of Natural History" is located in the village Ligourio of Argolida in a distance of 5 km from the ancient theatre of Epidaurus.
It was founded by Vasileios N. Kotsiomitis & Anastasia Sarri-Kotsiomiti in 1993.
By its establishment and operation, the Museum intended to add its own page in our country’s cultural activities. It is a nonprofit institution, (Decision Number 1401 Ministry of Culture /GNOS/ 53605/22.10/2001 Common Ministerial Act). It is administered by a seven-member Board of Directors recruited by scientific experts in the fields of Geology, Paleontology, Mineralogy, and Physics.
It inaugurated its operation in June 1995 under the name "Natural History Museum of Asclepius Epidaurus". In 2006 it was renamed in "MUSEUM KOTSIOMITI of NATURAL HISTORY " and the same year it was reseated in a new building, provided by the Municipality of Asclepius, whereas to facilitate the exhibition of more exhibits and additional collections.
Since its foundation, the Museum cooperates with expert scientists from the University of Athens, the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration as well as other scientific bodies, and thus the identification, the classification and the dating of its exhibits bear scientific validity.
It provides a full guided tour to its visitors. The latter can admire the approximately 6.000 exhibits, mainly minerals and fossils, shells, insects etc, out of the 22.000 that the Museum possesses.
It is recognized as the biggest thematic Museum in minerals and fossils throughout Greece, and offers special exhibits that capture the interest of its daily visitors and of the global scientific community. Its collections are considered unique in Greece and among the richest in Europe. Some of the exhibits are unique world widely. The ammonites’ collection of Epidaurus which distinguishes the Museum is considered as the most completed in the world.
The purpose of its founders is its further advancement, enrichment and constant operation as an active institution of research, education and culture.
The Museum’s visitors (especially the school groups) have the opportunity to admire, learn and enhance their knowledge on the exhibits and the history of all species. With the aid of educational material, maps, tables, diagrams and informative texts, the Museum depicts respectively the correspondent species, eras and times. Geological and paleontological maps and tables, as combined with texts and graphics, sketch out, inform and describe issues such as the creation of the Ground, the appearance and the evolution of life in our planet, as occurred billion years ago up to nowadays, while a complete series of posters portrays species of life of our times and previous times as well.
Fossilized organisms dated 530.000.000 years to 3.000.000 years ago, derived from Greece and the world, such as: Parts of petrified trunks of trees, Hippourites, corals, trilobites, fish, sea urchins oysters, ammonites, and especially full collections of ammonites of the region of Asklipios), an area internationally recognized as "a unique palaeontological monument of ammonites fauna" and several other species. In this magnificent world of minerals that they were created in the underground laboratories of nature throughout the centuries, we have the opportunity to admire, to envision and to create.
Minerals of cuprum, sulphur, iron and compositions of numerous other elements, grant through their gleam and colors, the luster, the uniqueness and the splendor, the joy of collection, the research, the study and the knowledge.
Their use and processing are as ancient as the human culture. They were used as jewels, amulets, seals, means of transaction and occultism, figurines, but also as much coveted pieces in known or unknown historical collections. They faithfully accompanied the eventful evolvement of the human race and formed a formidable background in its artistic expression.
Here we find minerals derived from the Hellenic and the international natural environment such as: azurites, malachites, vanadinites, quartzs, e.t.c and minerals mainly from the region of Lavrio, a region internationally known as a geological phenomenon.
The insects made their appearance in the animal kingdom in an ancient era and they remain intact until today. They are distinguished by their complicated figures and some of them remind us of shielded machines. Tiny, with either likeable or scary appearances, they organize their societies, in parallel with the human societies.
Collections of shells and corals, that belong to known or unknown species and are pulled out from the underwater kingdom of sea, some of them mysterious, other peculiar and many of them nowadays familiar to humans.
Collections of stone tools, various rungs and uses. Tools that were manufactured and used by Early Man and tools of tracking and collection of the mineral wealth.
Where to Find Us
The visit to the Museum, can enrich the schedule of one-day or multi-day excursions of vacationers of the wider region of Argolida, but also of the Municipality of Epidaurus which combines mountain and sea, and offers lots of activities and sightseeing that can fill pleasantly the time of visitors whose unique destination is the visit to our region, with the predominant Ancient theatre of Epidaurus, (monument of world heritage of 4th century BC. the best preserved Ancient Theatre, famous for its exceptional acoustics), and the archaeological site of the town of Asklepios. Moreover, by exploring the region of the Municipality of Epidaurus, we can discover saved monuments that reflect various eras of Greek history and activities that have taken place at different times in our place, such as: The small theatre of Epidaurus, dated from the 4th century BC, the "pyramid of Lygourio'" dated from 2100 BC, the Mycenaean bridge of Kazarma that is considered to be the oldest bridge in the world and dates back to 1.300 BC, the Citadel of Kazarma of the 4th. century BC, the Castle of New Epidaurus, known as Piada where the first national assembly of free Greek state took place, the ancient Mycenaean paths that invite walkers to follow the tracks of our ancestors. Resplendent Byzantine churches and monasteries, with unique Hagiographies from the 7th century onward, indicate the constant habitation of the area and attract the religious tourism. The pottery workshops of the region remain faithful to the tradition of creating handmade authentic replicas, practicing the ceramic art just like old times. Modern residences in green surroundings nearby the sea or in mountain areas of the Municipality meet the needs of visitors and promise a pleasant and comfortable stay. Traditional taverns, reflecting the particular traits of each region of the Municipality, offer culinary delights from traditional dishes. Also biological dairy and olive products of the area (of P.D.O.) but also fruits, citrus fruits, bread and many other local products, fascinate the visitor.

Μπροστά στην ομορφιά της φύσης και στην επιμονή του Ανθρώπου για την αναζήτηση των στοιχείων της ζωής και την υπέροχη διάταξή τους. Πιστεύω ότι τα λόγια υστερούν "αφόρητα" σ' αυτήν την ποιητική "ευμορφιά" των μορίων της φύσης.

Ελάτε ισχυροί κυβερνήτες της "ΓΗΣ" να δείτε τη πορεία που χάραξε η "ΣΟΦΙΑ" του Δημιουργού και αλλάξτε τη συμπεριφορά και τις αποφάσεις Σας.

Σε σχέση με άλλα τέτοιου είδους μουσεία, αυτό με εντυπωσίασε περισσότερο. Υπάρχουν πολλά όμορφα & ενδιαφέροντα αντικείμενα που αξίζει ο καθένας να κάνει το κόπο απ' όσο μακριά κι αν είναι να το επισκεφτεί.

Ολόκληρη η ομάδα μας έμεινε κυριολεκτικά εμβρόντητη από το πλήθος, τη ποικιλία και το θαυμαστό κόσμο των εκθεμάτων που κοσμούν το μουσείο, που είναι ένα αληθινό διαμάντι για την ευρύτερη περιοχή μας. Μας προκάλεσαν αληθινή κατάπληξη, ο πλούτος των αμμωνιτών της περιοχής, των οστράκων & των ορυκτών.
Σας ευχόμαστε αυτή η άκρως ενδιαφέρουσα συλλογή, να στεγαστεί σε μεγαλύτερο χώρο και να τύχει μεγαλύτερης στήριξης.

Σπάνιες τέτοιου είδους πρωτοβουλίες για τον Ελληνικό Χώρο. Τεράστια η εκπαιδευτική σημασία τους για μικρούς και μεγάλους. Από αυτά τα μουσεία εκπέμπεται το μήνυμα της επιστροφής του ανθρώπου στη φύση και της προστασίας του περιβάλλοντος. Η προσπάθεια χρειάζεται στήριξη και ενίσχυση. Θερμά συγχαρητήρια στους εμπνευστές, τους ιδρυτές και σε όσους βοήθησαν.
